Description:
Staff Category:  Staff Member

Contract Duration:  3 years

Grading:  5 or 6, depending on experience and qualifications

Closing Date: 17 February 2019

Reference Number:  HD01447

We are seeking for a highly motivated and excellent research technician to join our team. The Ellenberg group is part of the Cell Biology & Biophysics Unit and a multidisciplinary team consisting of biologists, chemists, physicists and computer scientists. Our overall goal is to systematically elucidate the mechanisms underlying cell division (mitosis & meiosis) and nuclear organisation (chromosomes & nuclear pores) with cutting-edge imaging technology. For that purpose, we are developing a broad range of advanced light and electron microscopy technologies to assay the functions of the involved molecular machinery non-invasively, automate the microscopy to address as many molecular components as possible, and computationally mine image data to extract biochemical and biophysical parameters.

Your role

You will support pre- and post-doctoral fellows in projects using cutting-edge imaging technologies such as super-resolution microscopy to study the organisation of the genome in 3D in single cells and map its structure to the epigenetic landscape in single cells. You will collaborate with several colleagues to advance our knowledge about the 3D folding principles of DNA and their functional consequences in situ in human cells. You should have experience in providing technical support at a high level, to assist with experimental design, to organise laboratory reagents/databases/material, to be responsible for instruments maintenance and should enjoy working in an international team within a highly collaborative atmosphere.

You have

  • You have an education as a research technician and you have at least 5 years of experience in the field of life sciences.
  • You have an M.Sc. Since you have completed your M.Sc. degree, you have at least 5 years of experience as a research technician/assistant in the field of life sciences or related disciplines.
  • You have a Ph.D. Since you have completed your Ph.D. degree, you have at least 2 years of experience as a research technician/assistant in the field of life sciences or related disciplines.
  • You have an excellent background in molecular engineering and cell biology. You have experience in FISH as well as in advanced light microscopy of single cells.
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required.

You might also have

  • Experience in super-resolution microscopy and/or image data analysis.

Why join us

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits. Excellent child care facility is available on campus.

What else do I need to know

We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1600 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.

The working language of the institute is English.
